Google’s Android market today marked an important milestone in is growth, one that signals its intentions to take on Apple’s App Store in a big way. 

Today, via the Android Dev Twitter account, the company announced that the Android Market has officially hit 100 000 applications. This points towards significant growth in a relatively short space of time - in April, reserved estimated pegged the open market at 50 000 applications. 
 
At present, the Android market is far and away the second largest application market in the mobile world. BlackBerry’s App Store and Nokia’s Ovi Store are its closest competitors, although these are still some way behind (the BlackBerry App Store recently hit the 10 000 application mark). 
 
This does not mean that the Android Market is posing a significant threat to Apple just yet; the company’s App Store currently makes over 280 000 paid and free applications available to users and is one of the busiest mobile marketplaces in the world. 
 
Apple has however had far longer to nurture this application stable than Android, which only hit the market on a global scale in early 2009.
