Dell today officially announced the launch of its new Android-based tablet computer, the Dell Streak, which is expected to take on Apple’s wildly popular iPad within the tablet market.

Users who registered for pre-sale orders will begin receiving their tablets today and the Streak will be available to the general public from tomorrow via the company’s official website.

The sleekly designed carbon black Android-based tablet features a 5” display and according to Dell is designed to offer ‘on-the-go’ entertainment, social communication and navigation to users. Built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G capabilities will also enable users mobile online access.

The tablet is also capable of performing voice calls and can send text messages; this sets it apart from the iPad. The Dell Streak is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It also features MicroSD support for up to 32 GB.

The new tablet retails for $549.99 (roughly R4000). Although we are currently unsure of what price the Streak will retail for locally, import taxes and customs duties may drive up costs.

Among the Dell Streak’s many features are integrated Google Maps, full screen web browsing, integrated social media apps (Twitter, Facebook, etc), a  high resolution camera, VGA front facing camera and a removable battery.

“The Dell Streak has found a way to fit your whole world in a 5” screen. Its unique size will help people discover new ways to enjoy the web, connect with friends, and navigate their lives”, said Ron Garrisques, president of Dell Communication Solutions.

At present, local release date schedules are unclear.
