EA scrapping online support for several games
By Johan Keyter 6 January 2011 | Categories: newsGame publishers Electronic Arts (EA), has announced that it will shut down the online support services for nearly 30 of its titles over the next few months. This means players won’t be able to access any online multiplayer features of the titles involved.
EA has stated that the move will only affect a small percentage of players and that the decision to halt online support wasn't an easy one. “EA SPORTS games scheduled for shutdown in February and March 2011 represent roughly 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles," the company wrote.
"Despite some people's perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games."
The company added, "These decisions to retire games is never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage."
Games that are slated to be retired includes all of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth titles on PC and Xbox 360, The Sims Carnival, several older FIFA titles and a variety of other sport titles. The full list can be viewed here.
