Facebook announced yesterday, 10 August 2009, that it had acquired social aggregation service FriendFeed.

“Facebook and FriendFeed share a common vision of giving people tools to share and connect with their friends,” said Bret Taylor, a FriendFeed co-founder and, previously, the group product manager who launched Google Maps. “We can’t wait to join the team and bring many of the innovations we’ve developed at FriendFeed to Facebook’s 250 million users around the world.”

While FriendFeed is primarily a sharing and conversational tool designed to help users organise their online lives, many would argue its advanced search engine is its most valuable feature. FriendFeed search allows users to pull real-time results from a host of sites on the web making it one of the better social search tools currently available. Facebook’s acquisition of FriendFeed should consequently result in enhanced social search tools on the world’s most popular social network.
