Gaming News Round-up - Xenomorph and Necromorph edition
By Hanleigh Daniels 1 February 2013 | Categories: newsA taste of the multiplayer action within Aliens: Colonial Marines
FPS fans itching to walk in the footsteps of Ellen Ripley within famous locations from the Aliens movie (such as Hadley’s Hope), will love the latest trailer (posted below) from Sega and Gearbox Software. This Tactical Multiplayer Trailer for the soon to be released Aliens: Colonial Marines, shows various special abilities on both the Xenomorph and the Marine side within multiplayer mode. The game is being released later this month for Windows PC, Xbox 360, as well as PS3 (also later on the Wii U).
We got a chance for some hands-on time with the game yesterday at a launch event in Sandton and played a little bit of the single player as well as multiplayer campaign. Besides the awesome graphics, we are most excited about the storyline and integration of locations and other elements from the first two Alien movies. Hearing the familiar ping of the sonic radar as we ventured down narrow corridors, only to be ripped apart by a seemingly unending army of Xenomorphs, turned out to be oodles of fun.
However, the best part of the evening was stalking marines as a Xenomorph in multiplayer mode, especially ripping competitors heads off with our tail while sneaking around on the ceiling.
First DLC map pack for Black Ops II parachutes in
At the beginning of this year, Activision declassified some info surrounding the first of four DLC map packs for Call of Duty: Black ops II (review) dubbed Revolution. Amongst others, this DLC contains a powerful new SMG (submachine gun) called “Peacekeeper” along with four new multiplayer maps. This week, the publisher revealed that this DLC also contains a brand-new zombie map entitled “Die Rise”, which has players navigating a maze of crumbling skyscrapers within a ravaged Chinese city.
There’s also an innovative new zombie mode dubbed “Turned” that interestingly enough allows gamers to fill the army-issued boots of a brain-munching member of the walking dead.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II Revolution is available exclusively on Xbox LIVE for the Xbox 360 for a suggested retail price of R134 or 1200 Microsoft Points, with other platforms to stagger mindlessly in its footsteps soon.
The low-down on the story behind Dead Space 3
All good things come in threes, and we desperately hope that this will ring true for Dead Space 3, one of our Top 5 most anticipated titles of Q1 2013. On 8 February, Isaac Clarke and John Carver will be bringing the spine tingling scares back, as they hunt down the source of the Necromorph scourge on the ice planet of Tau Volantis. Gamers will be able pull a Rambo and go it alone, or team up with a friend to share in the fear. The game will be available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Windows PC in one week’s time, and you can see a bit more of the storyline in the trailer posted below.
Open-world action adventure fans can mark 17 September 2013 on their calendars, as this is when Rockstar Games will be releasing the highly anticipated GTA V. This is around four months later than the company originally planned (autumn 2013), with Rockstar stating that GTA V is a “massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.”
GTA V will have three playable characters, namely Michael, Trevor and Franklin. Michael is a retired bank robber within the witness protection program along with his wife. After his spouse spends all the ill-gotten monetary fruits of his former “career”, he has little choice but to get back to what he does best - borrowing others property sans their permission or the possibility of return.
Like his friend Michael, Trevor is in his forties and this career criminal has an affinity for violence and drugs. Franklin is the baby (mid-20’s) of the trio but also the most capable one and gamers have to call upon all of their individual skills to pull off big heists within GTA V.
Players will get to switch between these three amigos, enabling them to experience the plot and missions from different perspectives.

The company has now dated its latest effort, Grid 2, which will receive the green light on 31 May 2013 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Check out the fantastic trailer featuring British motoring journalist Chris Harris going up against professional racing driver Matt Jackson (both in McLaren MP4-12Cs) in a two lap race around the Brands Hatch racing circuit posted below.
Wardrobe malfunction not a crisis in Crysis 3
As 22 February - the launch date of Crysis 3 - draws near, EA continues to make us drool over the stunning visuals on show within the upcoming sandbox FPS title, courtesy of the online video series dubbed The 7 Wonders of Crysis 3. This cinematic video series, produced by filmmaker Albert Hughes (From Hell, Dead Presidents), showcases the weapons, enemies, dynamic environments and gameplay features players can expect. The latest entry (posted below) in this series is called ‘The perfect weapon’ and confronts us with the question: Does the (nano) suit make the man, or the man make the (nano) suit?
