Gaming news round-up Part 2 - The Diablo on console edition
By Johan Keyter 11 February 2011 | Categories: newsDiablo III on consoles?
Blizzard Entertainment is famous for creating some of the greatest games out there, from Warcraft to Starcraft and of course, Diablo. But Blizzard has always released its games only on PC, saying it prefers the platform due to its flexibility.
According to Joystiq, yesterday at the DICE 2011 summit, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime spoke on stage, saying Blizzard is still “investigating” a Diablo III release for consoles. “I think you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console. It's something that we're actually doing an investigation into to see if that could make sense.”
He went on to note that “a number of issues” would still need to be addressed before any Blizzard game would come to console, including the ability to easily release patch updates and game expansions.
While Blizzard is looking into the possibilities of a console release, it stated last year that this would not “delay or affect the release of the PC game whatsoever,” so that's good news. We're not sure how great Diablo would play on a console, since mouse support has always been key to Blizzard games so we're a bit dubious.
Let's just hope this isn't pressure from Activision's side to raise profits from the game, it would be a shame if Blizzard were to release a sub par console port only to try and attract more sales. Currently, Diablo III is scheduled for PC release only with the release date, in true Blizzard fashion, remaining unannounced.
PlayBook gets some EA love
Although the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet looks set to have a solid business outlook, it won't be all work and no play. BlackBerry has announced that two EA games will be preloaded on the device - Need for Speed Undercover and the classic Tetris.
Not one of these games need an introduction, with Tetris being one of the most popular games ever, sporting more than 100 million paid mobile downloads. It should be interesting to see how especially NFS Undercover performs, seeing that BlackBerry talks a lot about the tablet's "next generation high definition 3D capabilities." The games will be demonstrated on the PlayBook at next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
