Internet search giant Google has revealed the latest version distribution figures concerning its Android mobile operating system (OS). These figures cast light on the relative number of active mobile devices that are operating on a given version of the Android platform.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) is still commanding the Android army from up front, with 45.3% of Android devices running this version. Froyo’s share of the Android pie is getting smaller though, as it powered over half (55.9%) of the mobile devices running on Android during August. Rising in the ranks is Froyo’s follow-up, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), with 38.2% of devices operating on Android 2.3.3-2.3.7, and another 0.5% running on Android 2.3-2.3.2.  

Android’s veterans, namely Android 2.1 (Eclair), Android 1.6 (Donut) and Android 1.5 (Cupcake) respective shares are all in the decline at 11.7%, 1.4% and 1.1% respectively.

After finally breaking through the significant 1% usage barrier milestone in August, the tablet loving Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) is steadily rising although its usage figures remaining somewhat fragmented. Around 0.2% of Android devices run on Android 3.0, whilst 0.9% operates on Android 3.1 and a further 0.7% utilise Android 3.2 as its mobile OS.

In related news Google also recently prepared app developers for getting their applications ready for the next version of its mobile OS, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich handsets, to be released later this year.
