Google officially cans Wave
By Tom Manners 5 August 2010 | Categories: newsIn a blog post released yesterday Google officially announced the demise of its once hopeful social media platform Google Wave.
This, according to the company, is due to a low user base and slow adoption. Despite this, Google confirmed that it will be keeping the service live until the end of the year.
“Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects” stated the blog post.
Wave was launched in May 2009 and was designed to integrate a number of social media networks into one platform, giving users the chance to chat, edit each other’s documents and transfer files, among other features.
Although there was considerable hype about the platform in the weeks following its release, user difficulties and slow adoption eventually left Wave stagnant and falling behind the likes of Facebook and Twitter.
Nonetheless, Google revealed that is is glad for the experience the company accrued during Wave’s tenure.
“Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. We are excited about what they will develop next as we continue to create innovations with the potential to advance technology and the wider web”
Going forward, it is uncertain of what Google’s plans are for the social media platform, although the company will need to quickly mobilise if it intends to stay relevant in this market.
