HP announces new Envy notebooks
By Ryan Noik 16 November 2011 | Categories: newsHP today announced redesigned versions of its Envy notebook range, which include 15.6”and 17.3” models, with the 17.3” version also available with a 3D display.
The Envy 15 and the Envy 17 pack Intel Quad Core processors, along with AMD Mobility Radeon high-definition graphic processing units (GPUs).
Additionally, both notebooks are available with optional Radiance full HD Infinity displays which the company explained “offers higher resolution, richer colour, better brightness and wider viewing angles than traditional notebook displays.”
Something new
The notebooks also feature a new Radiance backlit keyboard, with individual LEDs dedicated to each keycap. The keyboard further includes a proximity sensor to illuminate when it detects a user approaching the notebook and deactivate after the user leaves.
Sound is delivered through six speakers and a subwoofer, and unsurprisingly, through Beats Audio.
However, a new aluminium analog volume dial is also onboard, which the company explained works with the Beats Audio Manager, enabling users to easily and precisely adjust audio levels.
Further innovations featured in both notebooks include HP CoolSense technology, which automatically adjusts performance and internal fan settings for a cooler PC, and HP ImagePad, for precise multifinger touch navigation.
Additionally, both notebooks offer support for HDMI alongside full-size DisplayPorts, enabling users to connect up to three external displays. The company added that the Envy 17 also offers an advanced option with support for a 128 GB mSATA solid state drive (SSD) and up to two 1 Terabyte hard drives.
While the Envy 15 apparently will offer up to nine hours of battery life, the Envy 17 is claimed to achieve up to 9.5 hours “in ideal conditions,” which more specifically depends on one’s power management scheme and whether wireless is enabled.
Now for 3D
The company also announced the Envy 17 3D, which adds 3D viewing to the features and functionality of the Envy 17. Additionally, the notebook offers 1080p full HD viewing, along with improved viewing angles and colour gamut for all 2D and 3D content.
The notebook apparently is unfortunately not glasses free, but rather relies on HP’s 3D Active Shutter Glasses.
The notebooks are set to release stateside in the first week of December. No local pricing or availability has been confirmed as yet.
