The frustration associated with printing photos off your cellphone might soon be a thing of the past if HP has anything to say about it. The company introduced its ePrint solution yesterday in their Experience store, Sandton City.

With ePrint installed on all of HP’s new Photosmart printers, users would be able to email photos from their cellphones to an ePrint enabled HP printer to print immediately. The same rings true for documents, presentations and PDF files. No software setup is required on the phone although the printer must be connected to the net.

HP ePrint intelligence automatically sends files to the appropriate paper tray. For example, photos are sent to the printer’s photo tray (when available), while documents and email messages are sent to the main paper tray.

Files supported by HP ePrint include standard PDF, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint files, text files (.txt), and JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG and GIF image files.

Security

The HP ePrint email address for the web-connected printer is provided when users enable the service during initial product setup and registration. To help prevent unauthorised email, HP assigns a random email address to the printer and does not publicise the address. The printers email address is thus only available to those whom users have given the address or individuals with direct access to the printer, such as family members.

HP ePrint also provides industry-standard spam filtering and transforms email and attachments to a print-only format to reduce the threat of a virus or harmful content.

For further protection, HP offers the option to place a printer in “protected” mode. This mode enables a user to limit access to the web-connected printer by creating a “preferred sender” list of the email addresses of family members, friends, business associates, or others that you allow to send email to your printer. Only email messages indicating they are sent from a preferred sender will be sent to your printer.

New printers

HP’s new ePrint enabled Photosmarts include HP’s top of the line Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One; the Plus e-All-in-One with a 3.5” touch-screen; the e-All-in-One with a 2.4” touch-screen and the Premium Fax e-All-in-One that incorporates a host of connectivity options including wired and wireless networking.

Just like Lexmark, HP has also incorporated downloadable apps on their eAll-in-One Photosmart Printers. Some of the new print apps available this Spring include France 24 and Reuters for the latest international news articles; Bing Maps for maps and driving directions and Facebook for photo printing from Facebook accounts.
