Apart from providing a bleak future outlook for HP’s webOS, the tech fortune teller is also predicting a bleak future for Intel and Nokia’s MeeGo operating system (OS).  

Over the weekend DigiTimes reported that Intel plans to “temporarily discontinue development of its MeeGo OS” because of a lack of serious interest for the platform from mobile phone and PC vendors. The report stated that the company will now rather focus its efforts on hardware products, with its handset platforms to make use of either Google’s Android or Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 during 2012, according to industry sources.

Intel has however stated that it “remains committed to MeeGo and will continue to work with the community to develop and help meet the needs of customers and end users with open source.”

Nokia and Intel announced back in 2010 that they’ve combined their two OS platforms, Maemo and Moblin, to create the new MeeGo OS. In 2011, however, Nokia announced its new partnership with Microsoft, whereby it will employ Windows Phone as its primary smartphone OS, instead of either MeeGo and Symbian.  

The Finnish phone giant did manage to bring out a MeeGo-operating Nokia N9, which is also coming to South Africa, but has subsequently focused on Symbian updates, with 2012 expected to see the release of a flock of new Windows Phone-running Nokia smartphones.
