LG announced yesterday that global sales of its Optimus One smartphone have surpassed the one million mark in just 40 days after the phone’s initial launch. This budget conscious mobile, which is available locally, in most EU and Asia-Pacific countries as well as the US, has become the fastest selling mobile handset in the Korean company’s history.

The phone is powered by the Android 2.2 “Froyo” OS, Google’s latest operating system, enabling features such as up to three times faster internet browsing. According to LG, the Optimus One has been a big hit with first-time smartphone buyers looking for high performance and useful applications in an affordable handset.

“The versatile, powerful LG Optimus One was designed to provide an easy transition into the world of smartphones and as these numbers demonstrate, there is obviously a strong demand for this type of device,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications company.

“Optimus One seems to be what many customers were waiting for, proving that smartphones aren’t just for early adopters anymore.”

With its global roll-out still continuing, LG expects its Optimus One to be the electronics manufacturer’s first smartphone to sell ten million units worldwide.

What we said about the Optimus One: “LG’s Optimus One brings all the advantages and power of Android to the novice smartphone user, but without the potent price tag. For under R2 500 you get all the Android 2.2 goodness plus Wi-Fi and HSDPA – everything you can expect from more expensive handsets.” Read our full review here.
