Local service provider Vodacom has confirmed that it has plans to launch an aggressively priced smartphone to the local market.

According to MyBroadband, the company will release the ZTE Vodafone 546 (Laurence) at a price of R400.

It will feature a 2.2” TFT display with resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, a 2 megapixel camera, microSD support, 236.8 kbps EDGE and GPRS connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1 and WAP. Also included is an MP3 player, FM radio, organizer, voice memo and a speakerphone.

In addition to this, a touch-screen version will be released for roughly R500.

This should give a greater proportion of the South African population access to mobile broadband and smartphone related technologies such as email access and effective browsing.

In a territory which has a mobile penetration rate of over 100% such a release would certainly be significant for both the country and Vodacom alike.

At present no release details are yet available.
