According to the Hindustan Times (HT) Nokia plans to release a dozen new smartphones during the rest of this year, in an effort to fight off competition from the likes of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion and Apple’s iPhone.

“We will be launching 40 models in 2011 of which at least 30% would be smartphones,” a Nokia executive told the publication.

Details concerning particular models or the price range these fall under wasn’t made available, so it’s not known whether this includes a Windows Phone 7-powered device, MeeGo or Maemo 6 OS-operating smartphone. It is also unclear if this is Nokia’s release schedule for India only, or if the same amount of models will see international release.

Windows Phone OS will be the primary operating system for Nokia’s smartphones going forward so hopefully the Finnish manufacturer will release at least one device running Microsoft’s mobile OS in 2011.

Speaking of MeeGo, technology blog CybercomLab’s has posted a video of a Nokia N900 smartphone running on the MeeGo user interface (UI). You can see this prototype video demo of the MeeGo UI posted below.
