Local cinema group Nu Metro has officially announced that it will be screening selected Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup matches live in 3D during the duration of the tournament. This will take place at fourteen selected theatres around South Africa and has been achieved in conjunction with Supersport and DStv.

This will be the only opportunity for South African residents to view live FIFA World Cup matches in 3D. Although selected international networks such as ESPN and Sky have trialled 3D broadcasting and are currently offering it to subscribers it is not currently available locally.

Both Multichoice and On Digital Media, South Africa’s primary Pay-TV providers, have revealed that they have no immediate plans to roll out 3D broadcasting to local users.

The infrastructure required to allow for 3D broadcasting is significantly greater than that required for Standard Definition and High Definition (720p) broadcasting via satellite. Implementing this would be expected to drive up subscription costs considerably for Pay-TV viewers.

A total of eighteen matches will be screened at Emperors Palace, Montecasino, Clearwater Mall, The Glen, Bedford Centre, Hyde Park, Menlyn Park, The Pavilion, Galleria, V&A Waterfront, Canal Walk, Riverside Mall, Loch Logan and Walmer Park.
