Engadget is reporting that mobile manufacturer Samsung is germinating plans to double its smartphone marketshare by the end of 2010 by releasing a larger range of devices than ever before.

According to Lee Donjoo, senior vice president of the company's Mobile Communications division, Samsung has plans to triple its smartphone output this year in hopes of achieving a 10% marketshare penetration. Currently the company holds less than 5% of the global smartphone market.

Although this may appear to be a lofty goal the company is starting to make a name for itself as a developer to watch out for. Recently leaked specifications behind its Android powered Galaxy Pro S suggest that Samsung is making great strides in the right direction, particularly by harmonising Google’s mobile OS with its own 3.0 TouchWiz interface.

In addition to this Samsung has recently launched a number of more humble, yet affordable models such as the Genoa which appear to be going down well with consumers.

Overall however the company still has some way to go before it can take on the smartphone heavyweights. Research firm IDC recently released statistics which indicate that market leader Nokia currently holds 39.3% of the total global marketshare in this segment, followed by BlackBerry at 19.4% and Apple at 16.1%.
