According to CNET, Sony announced late last week that the PlayStation 3’s built-in Blu-ray player will receive a firmware upgrade that allows it to play 3D Blu-ray discs.

“In September this year, we’re launching another Firmware upgrade, and this one is going to upgrade the PS3 to support Blu-ray movies in 3D,” said Mick Hocking, senior director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

This upgrade cements the PS3’s reputation as a “buy it once, use it forever” device as Sony lauds it to be the only existing Blu-ray console that will be able to be upgraded to 3D.

Like the rest of the PS3’s firmware upgrades it’s expected to be available to users at no extra cost. You will however still need a compatible 3D TV and/or 3D glasses to make use of the upgrade.

The upgrade makes every PS3 HDMI 1.4 capable, meaning they will be able to display full HD 3D pictures.

It was also announced that support for 3D photos and 3D YouTube videos will be included in future updates.
