The microprocessor isn’t the only tech invention celebrating an anniversary, as Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) console turned five this week.

According to a post on the official US PlayStation blog by Sid Shuman, senior social media specialist at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), the 17th of November marks the five-year anniversary of PlayStation 3’s launch in the United States. The American launch took place just one week after the console was released in Sony’s home country of Japan. As of 30 September Sony has sold over 55.5 million PS3 consoles.

The PS3’s main rival, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, celebrated its five year of existence around this time last year already.

To mark this occasion Sony asked some of the gaming industry’s leading developers to comment on their top choices for must-play PS3 titles. Some of these developers include Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, who selected God of War III, Grand Theft Auto IV and Little Big Planet as his top three and Epic Games’ design director Cliff Bleszinski who opted for Heavy Rain, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune as well as Killzone 2. Patrick Liu who worked on titles such as Battlefield 3 as producer for DICE, selected Shatter, Siren Blood Curse and Wipeout HD Fury as his top PS3 choices.

In related news Sony and Telefonktiebolaget LM Ericsson have agreed that the Japanese tech giant will acquire Ericsson’s stake in Sony Ericsson, to make the joint venture a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony.
