Sony recalls half a million Vaio laptops

Sony International yesterday issued a warning to customers globally regarding a glitch which has affected over 500 million Sony Vaio laptops. The fault could introduce overheating issues to selected Vaio notebooks which could result in injury to users.

The company revealed that heat monitoring chips in selected Vaio C and Vaio F series laptops, which were released in January, could be defective.

Thus far Sony has confirmed that it has received roughly 40 complaints regarding the issue and added that affected consumers will be able to download a software update or arrange to have the laptop picked up and fixed by Sony itself.

The issue affects a sum total of 535 000 laptops worldwide, 233 000 of which have been voluntarily recalled in the United States.

Although no injuries have yet been confirmed, this debacle should serve as ample embarrassment for Sony, which is regarded globally for developing and manufacturing highly reliable notebooks and netbooks.
