Sony today released a new upgrade to its PlayStation 3 firmware. Version 3.55 is according to the minuscule post on the Sony blog, "a minor update that adds a security patch."

The update is believed to be a measure from Sony to combat the PS3 Jailbreak device which surfaced earlier this year. The device allows users to illegally backup and play games on their PS3 console, without needing to insert different discs every time. This means users can trade games out and copy it to their hard drives, without paying a penny.

In September of this year Sony lashed out at users of the device, filing a lawsuit against online retailers to prohibit them from selling the Jailbreak devices.

The company then released a security patch to stop Jailbreak users from accessing their systems, however the creators in turn developed a downgrade for the PlayStation 3 which allowed users to roll back Sony's security changes and make the device usable once more.

Hopefully for Sony the release of firmware update 3.55 will fix the issue, otherwise it's back to pirate hunting in both the virtual and legal realms.
