iPhone 4 demand sets record

Apple’s iPhone 4 was officially announced last week at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California. This week the company announced that pre-orders for the smartphone surpassed 600 000 in just one day, which is a record figure for iPhone. The incredible demand resulted in many order and approval system malfunctions.

“Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration,” Apple stated. “We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.”

In related news, Macrumors yesterday reported that the iPhone 4 has 512 MB of RAM as opposed to the iPad’s and 3G S’ 256 MB.

Is this the N900’s successor?

Nokia’s highly anticipated N8 smartphone will be out in Q3; in addition to this the company also announced the X5 and X6 8 GB during the week.

A video showing what appears to be the Finnish company’s first MeeGo device also created some buzz on the net. The video has subsequently been removed.

According to GSM Arena the phone sports design cues from the N8, a full QWERTY keyboard and a full-touch user interface.

Droid X specs out

The American cellular network Verizon Wireless has released a few specs for the Motorola Droid X on its website. The phone will sport a 4.3" display and HDMI output as it has the ability to capture HD videos (720p). The official launch for the phone will take place at the end of this month in the US.

Two more bada phones announced

Engadget has reported on the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) QWERTY slider phones from Samsung which will make their debut at CommunicAsia 2010. Both the Wave 2 as well as the Wave 2 Pro will run on the Korean manufacturer’s bada OS and will feature Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 UI.

Both devices will sport GPRS/EDGE connectivity (no 3G), 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1. They will also feature 3.2" TFT LCD screens, 3 megapixel cameras with video recorder, A-GPS and 80 MB of built-in memory that is expandable via a microSD slot supporting cards up to 16 GB in size.

New ATI Catalyst drivers out

AMD has released the latest ATI Catalyst drivers (version 10.6) supporting a range of ATI graphics cards, including the Radeon HD range (starting with the ATI Radeon HD 2400 series and going all the way to the Radeon HD 5900 series), as well as the AMD FireStream range.

The new drivers bring some new features to these graphics cards, such as GPU acceleration of H.264 video content by making use of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and official support for OpenGL 4.0 and OpenGL 3.3.

Largest embedded NAND flash memory unveiled
