US and South Korea under cyber attack
By Mike Joubert 10 July 2009 | Categories: newsUnited States and South Korean websites have been under cyber attack since the 4th of July. The attacks are mainly targeted at government sites including the White House, State Department and Pentagon, although commercial sites, such as South Korea’s Kookmin bank, have also been hit.
According to Associated Press up to 100 000 infected zombie computers linked to a network were involved in the attack, most of them located in South Korea. Other reports narrow it down to 12 000 infected PCs in Korea and 8 000 abroad that took part in these distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
A statement from Korea’s National Intelligence Service stated, \"This is not a simple attack by individuals. The attack appeared to have been elaborately prepared and staged by a certain organisation or state.”
The main suspect behind the attack is North Korea, although both the US and South Korea have not gone so far as to state this officially.
