News on the gaming front is beginning to see a significant increase ahead of this week’s annual E3 conference, which is to be held in Los Angeles.

Among the most noteworthy news within this sector over the weekend was the supposed leak of an Xbox 360 Slim console on an Italian website.

According to Engadget Italian gaming news website, Console Tribe inadvertently flighted a Microsoft advertisement showing a rather more lithe and angular version of the Xbox 360 than we are currently used to. The advertisement was quickly pulled from the page, but not before several internet users managed to save a copy.

Console Tribe has since acknowledged the mistake and has revealed that the Xbox 360 Slim will incorporate a 250 GB hard drive and a new cooling system.

Microsoft however has yet to give the official go ahead regarding the validity of the leak. Nonetheless the company is expected to confirm the Slim, as well as the pricing and availability details behind it, during the coming week.

A slimmer, cheaper version of the Xbox 360 may be just what Microsoft needs to get back onto the proverbial gaming horse. Sony’s release of its own slimmed down version of the PlayStation 3 in September 2009 sparked massive sales over the festive season, pushing the console ahead of the Xbox 360 for the quarter.
