Following right in the wake of Samsung’s announcement that it plans to provide the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update for its Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note during Q1 of 2012, Sony Ericsson (SE) has revealed its own upgrade plans for its Xperia mobile devices.  

The company stated that the first Xperia smartphones that will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich, starting from around the end of March to early April 2012, will be the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray.

Following these devices will be the Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and Xperia pro, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia active as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman, which will all be updated as of the late April to early May.  

No local release info is available yet, but the SE said that this will be a phased roll-out taking place over several weeks. According to the company, owners of its 2011 range of Xperia smartphones will receive a notification on their phone that will instruct them to download the software over the air via 3G or Wi-Fi. Alternatively, users will also have the option to connect their smartphone to their PC in order to download the firmware update via PC.

SE will be sharing more info surrounding the progress, demo videos, as well as the capabilities and functionality that the update will bring to these devices “over the next months”.

 

In related news Sony Ericsson also recently revealed that the brand would be phased out as early as mid-year 2012, as the company looked to become a “complete smartphone company”, selling its new smartphones under the Sony label.
