10 games you need to experience at rAge Expo 2017 this weekend
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 6 October 2017 | Categories: newsrAge Expo 2017 kicks off today, and lasts the entire weekend (6-8 October). With the previous year's event totalling more than 30 000 attendees over the three days, the Ticketpro Dome is expected to be jam packed this time round. As such, any savvy attendee is advised to use their time wisely, and check out some of the biggest games on display.
To save you a little bit of effort, we've rounded up 10 titles that are worthwhile queuing for to play and watch at rAge this weekend.
Assassin's Creed Origins
This latest title in the Assassin's Creed franchise has been somewhat of an expo darling this year, winning over most gamers at E3 and Gamescom. The status is well deserved though, with recent gameplay trailers for the game showcasing a rich experience. Added to this is some superb storytelling and cinematic cut scenes, which the franchise is well known for.
One of three headlining games Xbox South Africa has on display at its stand this year, the wait to play it is long, but well worth it. Assassin's Creed Origins lands on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC later this month on 27 October.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War
Also a major title on the horizon, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the hotly anticipated sequel that Lord of the Rings fans have been waiting for. Driven by the new Nemesis engine, which generates unique interactions with enemies, the scale and scope for Shadow of War has been increased significantly. This title arrives early next week on 10 October across all major platforms.
Gran Turismo Sport
On show in part last year, PlayStation South Africa is offering gamers a deeper dive into the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport. Hopefully conjuring up memories of past titles in the series, realism is the key focus for this driving game. Another October release, GT Sport is landing on the PS4 come the 17th.
Far Cry 5
If the thought of tackling a bunch of religious zealots in rural midwest America sounds good to you, then Far Cry 5 should definitely be on your must-play list. Part of the Megarom stand, and their slew of games on show, it is one you're likely going to queue for, for quite some time. Again, it will be worth the wait, as gamers will be able to experience the action that this Far Cry title has in store. A 2018-slated release, Far Cry 5 hits consoles on 27 February next year.
Call of Duty: WWII
One game we've spent quite a bit of time playing is Call of Duty: WWII. At rAge this year, PlayStation SA is offering gamers a chance to try out the first-person shooter. The multiplayer beta for this title impressed us enough to think that the Call of Duty franchise has returned to its usual high level of quality. Call of Duty: WWII is set to arrive next month on 3 November.
Forza Motorsport 7
The other big racing title on show at rAge this year, Forza Motorsport 7 is for gamers who perhaps want an experience slightly different to the hyper-realism of Gran Turismo Sport. That said, it is no less entertaining, and should be one of the titles that excels on the Xbox One and One X consoles.
Cuphead
Cuphead is one game we've had a soft spot for some time, mainly because of its intriguing and beautiful cartoon styling. Don't be fooled by this cute looking game, as it's a side-scrolling shooter that will prove challenging for even the most veteran of gamers. Currently out on Xbox One, if you have forgotten about Cuphead, rAge offers the perfect opportunity to get reacquainted.
Marvel vs Capcom Infinite
This year's rAge is a tad short on fighting titles, but that's where Marvel vs Capcom Infinite comes into play. Merging the two worlds once again, the game tries to conjure up all those memories of old-school arcade versions of the franchise. If you want to see Captain America join forces with Ryu, give Infinite a whirl.
Marvel's Spider-Man
Before you get too excited to play as the webslinger, this title is only being showcased in video format. That said, if you're attending rAge this weekend, you'll be able to see what this much hyped iteration of Spider-Man game will be packing. If the past gameplay trailers are anything to go by, there'll be plenty of quicktime button sequences.
God of War
Another game that many cannot wait to play, PlayStation SA has only organised an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the forthcoming God of War. This time round, Kratos is sporting a beard and wielding Norse weaponry. Oh, he also has a son. To see whether Kratos is as good at raising a child as he is at killing, find a person wearing a PlayStation shirt and ask them about the screening.
