1917 trailer sees Sam Mendes taking on WWI
By Staff Writer 4 October 2019 | Categories: newsThis week seems to be giving the thumbs up to World War One movies, at least trailer wise. First, we saw The King’s Man, the third instalment in the Kingsman franchise set during the Great War. Now it’s time for one that’s more serious in tone. 1917 caught our attention seeing that it is directed by Sam Mendes, auteur of American Beauty as well as the two recent Bond movies - Skyfall and Spectre.
The movie tells a desperate tale. Two British soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay, Captain Fantastic) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman, Game of Thrones), are tasked to warn a battalion of men that they are about to walk into a German trap. To make it personal, Blake’s brother is part of this group. 1917 traces the duo’s desperate race across entrenched enemy lines to catch up in time.
Being very much a British movie, you have a helluva supporting cast, including Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), and Irishman Andrew Scott (Sherlock).
With flavours of Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates, and All Quiet on the Western Front, 1917 looks like a must watch, with a potential claim to some Oscars.
