Apple is not strictly getting into the energy business, but it has announced the formation of a subsidiary called Apple Energy LLC. With solar farms located in its base of operations in Cupertino, as well as Nevada, the company is reportedly aiming to sell surplus reserves of solar power it generates in those areas. 

According to The Verge, Apple's currently able to generate 93% of the power it requires worldwide, but there are plans in the works to expand the size of its solar farms. This has led some to leap to the conclusion that it's for the long-rumoured Apple Car or iCar or whatever you wish to call it. 

At the moment, the likelihood of Apple selling solar energy to local Cupertino residents is slim, as 9to5Mac notes that Apple Energy LLC is still too small to have any influence on the pricing of power. As such, it will likely sell the surplus of its solar energy to other larger power companies.
