Bixby 2.0 announced, with Samsung opening it up to devs
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 19 October 2017 | Categories: newsSamsung's annual Developer Conference is currently wrapping up in San Francisco, bringing with it a number of notable announcements. One of the more significant ones, sees the company reveal Bixby 2.0, the second iteration of its digital assistant, which first debuted on the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Unlike the more mobile-focused original Bixby, Samsung says Bixby 2.0 is geared towards smart home devices, which adds credence to the rumours of a Bixby speaker being in the works. With most tech manufacturers that have a digital assistant in their stable, such as Google, Apple and Amazon, all featuring a smart speaker as well, Samsung following suit makes a lot of sense.
That said, Bixby 2.0 could feature in a slightly different form factor when it becomes more commercially available, with Samsung adding that it will, "act as the control hub of your device ecosystem". With a host of different products already in its sights, Bixby 2.0 may be purposed for controlling one's refrigerator, smart TV, air conditioner and other mobile devices.
For now Bixby 2.0 is slated for developers to begin tinkering with it and create their own solutions. As such, we could see Bixby 2.0 come to fruition at Mobile World Congress next year with the arrival of new smart devices.
