Canon Series: Pro Tip - Simon McDonnell
By Staff Writer 26 November 2015 | Categories: sponsored contentAfter pressing pro photographer Simon McDonnell about his favourite lens and the new gear he recently acquired, we asked him for a photographic tip that is perhaps not commonly talked about.
Simon McDonnell: I think spatial awareness is vital for all photographers to keep in mind. Whether shooting wildlife, a rally, or a street scene downtown, it’s so easy to get caught up in the moment. I’ve seen several near-misses where photographers have been split-seconds from disaster, with an eye still glued to the viewfinder. I believe it’s vital to be able to ‘see the shot’ without necessarily having the camera in front of your face.
Also, is there a cheap piece of equipment/tool/solution that you use on a regular basis?
Simon McDonnell: There is always a roll of duct tape in my bag. Whether it’s securing a lens hood while I’m sitting in the open door of a helicopter or covering a tear in a rain coat, duct tape is an essential part of my gear.
