Drone manufacturer DJI has been on a strong run of late, debuting a number of devices in the past few months. Their latest offering is the Spark and what makes this drone particularly noteworthy is its size. 

According to the company, it has the same size and weight as a can of soda. Perhaps not one of our 330 ml ones, but the body (excluding quadcopter propellers) of the Spark is certainly around the same dimensions as your smartphone.

Specifically, it weighs a remarkable 272 grams, and is a substantial margin smaller than DJI's previous offering, the Mavic Pro. It's also on sale in the US for $499, which includes the Spark drone, six propeller blades, a charging cable and dock. You can also shell out a further $200 for an additional hot swappable battery and remote control.  

What else does that $499 buy you? Well the Spark has a flight time of up to 16 minutes, which begs the question as to what kind of drone user will buy it. Our guess is that it will be best served as a complimentary drone, as opposed to a user's main choice. 

Moving on, it can shoot in up to 1080p via its 12 MP onboard camera, which operates on a 2-axis gimbal rig. Other specs sees a transmission range of two kilometres, with a top flying speed of 50 km/h, depending on the wind conditions. 

With online orders already active in the US, the Spark is expected to ship on 15 June. For now, it's unclear when local drone retailers will be stocking the DJI Spark.
