Dubai announces that it will be host city for 2017 World Future Sports Games
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 14 March 2016 | Categories: newsThe past weekend saw the world's best drone pilots descend upon Dubai for the inaugural World Drone Prix. As it turns out, this weekend-long competition is part of a much bigger plan for the city of Dubai and Future sports in general, as it announced that it will be hosting the World Future Sports Games in late-December 2017. A precise date has not been detailed just yet, as a few of the events still need to be decided on.
Currently slated for the Future Games is Drone racing, as well as a number of events involving robots. These include everything from swimming and running, to wrestling and car racing, although the latter most likely will involve robotic controls rather than an actual robot driving the car.
While many of the finer details are still being hashed out, the city of Dubai is aiming to become the go-to destination for robotic sports tech in coming years, with potential for the such sports yet to be fully realised. Could we one day see robots enter an octagon ring to destroy one another? Oh wait, we did have Robot Wars already, with a reboot recently commissioned for the BBC.
