Facebook debuts new event listings for 10 American cities
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 28 June 2016 | Categories: newsDespite Facebook's most recent efforts around algorithms, curated news stories and 360-degree live streaming, the company still has its roots in social media. As such, this latest announcement hopes to bring some of that back, as Facebook reveals its new Featured Events list.
Like the name says, this new feature lists all the noteworthy events taking place within a major city. Facebook has initially rolled it out across 10 metropoles within the United States. They are Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. As TechCrunch notes, Facebook plans to spread the feature to more cities in coming months should it prove popular.
In terms of how events are chosen, Facebook has enlisted a number of curators to pick and choose the best options a city has to offer. The company has also stated that this feature is different from the Suggested events that currently exists, which is derived from friend's interests and RSVPs.
It should prove interesting to see how the curation process develops, especially as Facebook has come under fire for the reported bias curating of its Featured Stories news feed.
