Facebook, like all other social media platforms, has a problem with some users posting questionable comments and content. To try and combat this, the company is testing out a new downvote button, as spotted by Taylor Lorenz of The Daily Beast.

Working in a very similar voting system that Reddit has in place, Facebook confirmed to The Verge that downvoting is a means of flagging certain comments. Hitting the downvote button on a comment hides it from the user's timeline, but does trigger a pop-up that asks whether the comment was offensive, misleading or off-topic.

As for what action will be taken if a comment is deemed to receive too many offensive or misleading responses, remains to be seen. Facebook is, however, quick to point out that this is not a dislike button. The downvote mechanism is currently being tested out by a small group of Facebook users in the United States, with it unclear if other countries will also get the chance to trial the button.
