For most (pretty much all) online users, advertisements can be painful experience, but are often necessary in order to help websites keep the lights on. The same goes for social media and apps, which brings us to the latest development of Facebook Messenger, with the company explaining that its beta testing for ads on the instant messaging app's home screen is being expanded worldwide.

According to Engadget, the initial rollout will be slow, but it should become more highly visible on the app by the end of the year. As expected, the move is not designed to intentionally irritate users, but boils down to dollars and cents.

In a statement provided to Venturebeat, Facebook's Messenger product lead, Stan Chudnovsky, notes that, "It’s definitely how we’re going to be making money right now. And going forward, there are some other business models we are exploring as well, but they’re all around ads one way or another.”

How users will react to the addition of ads, as well as how the company can still keep the Messenger experience friendly and streamlined, remains to be seen. Either way, ads look to be a significant part of Messenger moving forward.
