It's about time for a South African themed western, and by all accounts, Five Fingers for Marseilles looks set to deliver.

With the first trailer available and the movie set for debut on 6 April next year, Five Fingers seems intent to do things differently. Filmed in Xhosa, it tells the story of "Five Fingers" Tau, who years ago fought against police oppression in the rural town of Marseilles, killing two cops in the process. After twenty years this outlaw figure makes his return, only to find his town under new threat.

Vuyo Dabula, who locals might know as Gadaffi in Generations the Legacy, stars as Tau, while Zethu Dlomo (Black Sails, Fanie Fourie's Lobola) features as Lerato.

Michael Matthews is helming this as his debut feature film, having previously directed big brand commercials and the short film Sweetheart. He is also the co-founder of Be Phat Motel Film Company, along with Sean Drummond, who wrote the script for Five Fingers. The team is keeping quite busy, since they are also in charge of the new proof of concept short for Charlie Human's Apocalypse Now Now.

Talking to Variety, Drummond notes “The time is more right than ever before for this film. Socially and politically, a lot of the themes we explore are resonating now, the good Westerns always had socio-political undercurrents running through them.”
