Gaming News Roundup - The Future Beckons Edition
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 27 June 2014 | Categories: newsIn the wake of E3, there is still plenty of gaming news to get excited about, with a gameplay trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, gaming content arriving on PS Plus and Lycan filled action in The Order: 1886.
New trailer details the Future Tech, Exoskeletons in COD: Advanced Warfare
The Call of Duty franchise is well storied as being one of the top FPS titles in the gaming world, with the latest addition, Advanced Warfare set for release on 4 November 2014. The game's co-developers, Sledgehammer has unveiled a new gameplay trailer detailing the future military technology and exoskeleton suits worn by soldiers in-game.
The trailer itself is filled with plenty of action, showcasing some of the weaponry available to gamers, and how to best put it to use while playing. A few of the key future tech additions include the threat detection grenade, which provides gamers with an infrared map of opposition players once thrown, as well as the mobile barricade, that provides a makeshift barrier for gamers to sit behind during heavy enemy fire. There are also new hoverbikes and hovertanks, designed to negotiate all types of terrain. This is not not to mention the exoskeletons themselves, which are the real party piece of Advanced Warfare, with players being able to jump, run and fight on a whole new level.
Based on what we saw behind closed doors at Megarom's showcase event last night, the detail on offer and characterisation in particular has certainly been stepped up considerably.
There is certainly no doubt that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is set to be one of the most hotly anticipated COD titles in FPS history.

Video of Unreal Engine 4 on Android L released
For those of not in the loop, the Google I/O developer conference took place this week, with one of the major announcements being Google's new OS, codenamed Android L. Google I/O attendees were treated to a demo of Epic's Unreal Engine 4 on the mobile version of Android L, titled Rivalry. In the video below, two exosuit-clad soldiers go head to head on a faux flappy bird arcade game.
The move comes as Google touts the capabilities of it's new Android OS extension pack as a mobile gaming device. Based on the evidence from the video, developers should be excited to see what the Unreal Engine 4 can deliver.
Legend of Korra coming to gaming consoles
Platinum Games, the developers behind Bayonetta 2, has detailed plans to bring the popular Nickelodeon TV series, Legend of Korra to life in gaming form. The Legend of Korra follows the exploits of the young female with the ability to control all four natural elements. If that sounds familiar, the series is based of Avatar: The Last Airbender, although the bald-headed kid will not feature in this version.
Platinum Games has released a teaser for the Legend of Korra game, which is set for release on the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC (Windows only). At this stage, no official release date has been set, but the game should prove popular with the same set as the television series has proved to be.
Battlefield Hardline Beta returns for second round of testing
The Beta version of Battlefield Hardline which recently closed it's doors to gamers, is set for a second round of testing according to EA's studio head Steve Papoutsis. The initial round of Beta testing opened up exclusively to PS4 and PC users, shortly after Battlefield Hardline's existence was made official at E3 last week. EA were happy to report positive feedback from gamers during the Beta, with many recommendations and critiques taken on board by the game's developers.
The second Beta was confirmed to be made available by Battlefield Hardline's co-developers Visceral Games, in September later this year. This time round the Beta can be accessed to PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360, with the addition of PS4 and PC users.
For those interested in simply playing the finished product, Battlefield Hardline is set for release later this year, on 21 October. As a refresher, check out the below trailer of in-game multiplayer footage to see what Battlefield Hardline will be offering gamers.
Lycans take centre stage in The Order: 1886 video
There have been a few good Lycan renditions over the years, such as Rise of the Lycans, (no, Twilight does not qualify; first person to ask why not gets bitten on the shoulder) but based on the latest video of The Order: 1886, its looks like the game will be taking the iconic werewolves to a whole other level.
Along with the fact that they are exquisitely detailed, the Lycans – called half-breeds in the forthcoming game – are actually frighteningly believable. Indeed, apparently a good amount of effort has gone into making these Lycans seem less hokey and mythological and more along the lines of what actual werewolves could very well look like if they weren’t just imagined, but just not yet found by people. Or perhaps, those who did stumble across these kinds of Lycans never lived to tell about it.
Take a look at the video below, which not only might make you pause before urban exploring your nearby sewers, but also serves to amp up excitement for the game itself.
More Hyrule Warriors details emerge
The more we hear about Hyrule Warriors, the more excited we become about dusting off our Wii U in the upcoming months. The latest details, leaked courtesy of Famitsu, point to additional playable characters, as well the return of a favourite item of Link’s, the hook shot.
More particularly, players will apparently be able to step into the shoes of a new witch character, Lana, who employs a spell book during battle, and is able to create magical barriers. The second new playable character to make an appearance will be Agitha; and it should certainly be interesting to see how this character combines using a parasol and the ability to summon insects.
As in the Legend of Zelda games, the hook shot will enable Link to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Furthermore, Link will apparently be able to done the more nostalgic garb from 2006’s Twilight Princess.
