With artificial intelligence on the horizon, a set of standards and practices will likely determine how effectively this technology is applied across multiple industries. This, at least, is the view of the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society. It's a newly minted collaboration between five major players in the ICT sphere - Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon and IBM.

The establishment of this partnership was first detailed by The New York Times earlier in the month, but now the five companies have had an official meeting to discuss their AI-focused initiative.

According to Engadget, the Partnership's goal is not only to set standards and best practices around AI, but also to educate people on the fact that artificial intelligence will not lead to the end of humanity as the result of a robot uprising. Furthermore, there is a plan to create an open platform for developers to collaborate with one another and create their own AI systems.

With all five companies already full steam ahead with their own AI projects, such as IBM's Watson or Facebook's Deep Text, it should prove interesting to see what kinds of enhancements they can make in the field together.
