Here at TechSmart we're still on the fence when it comes to smartwatches. It's clear to see that there is plenty of potential in wrist-mounted wearables, but none has truly come up with the goods yet. When you add to the fact that no smartwatch to date has captured the same level of style and sophistication compared to their ticking counterparts (with the Huawei Watch being one exception), Google's latest plan becomes an intriguing one.

You may have seen some chatter about the company's latest partnership on Twitter yesterday, but now Google has confirmed the news: the partnership between itself, Intel and luxury watchmaker Tag Heuer has been given the go ahead. The announcement was made at this year's Baselworld, which is like the MWC of luxury watches.

Although an actual smartwatch is yet to be released, it's clear to see which aspect of the wearable each party each will be responsible for. The design will be taken care of by the Swiss manufacturer, which only a brief glance at their more conventional efforts should reveal they are more than capable off. Internally, Intel's chipsets will be doing the heavy lifting, though the precise chipset is yet to be detailed. With Google in the mix, it will be running Android Wear, and therefore perhaps give the Wearable OS a competitor to Apple's $10 000 gold-plated Watch.

Also unknown at this stage is when we will see the culmination of the three parties’ efforts hit the market, but reports suggest a prototype will be arriving before the year's end. Click on the announcement video below to hear some of the finer details.
