It's been almost two years since Google first debuted its app Allo at the I/O developer conference. While an interesting take on messaging apps, Allo appears to have struggled to find the traction with Android users that Google would have hoped for.

So much so that the company has decided to press pause on the app's development, and instead shift focus to its Android Messages platform. According to Google's Anil Sabharwal, Allo is not being scrapped altogether, but rather being put on hold.

In an exclusive feature with Google, The Verge details that the company is putting all its eggs into one basket - Rich Communication Services (RCS). This will take the guise of a platform named Chat, with Google dedicated several messaging solutions to it in order to gain higher interest from Stateside networks and carriers.

If you're a fan of Allo and wish to continue to use the messaging app, Google says that support for the service will continue in 'some capacity'. To what extent that will entail though, remains to be seen, but it seems like Allo is in its swansong.
