Google introduces Add-Ons Store for Docs and Sheets
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 12 March 2014 | Categories: newsGoogle has announced the launch of a new Add-Ons store for its Docs and Sheets applications. With this development Google is set to offer a host of tools and features to enhance the quality of users’ content. The Add-Ons store currently lists 32 partner-developer designed tools, available across all users’ documents or spreadsheets once downloaded, with more to follow. It’s also important to note that Docs and Sheets have their own dedicated stores, with specific tools for download.
Google Drive users can access the Add-Ons store while working on a document, with a new “Add-Ons” tab now located in the top horizontal menu, under your document’s title. These add-ons are powered by Google Apps Script, the company’s dedicated JavaScript platform. Developers interested in creating similar tools are asked to apply to publish their designs here.
Some of the new tools being highlighted by Google include Avery Label Merge, EasyBib Bibliography Creator and Merge by MailChimp. Avery Label Merge allows users to import and integrate addresses and names from Sheets into Docs for printing. EasyBib is a tool designed to make referencing and source citation far easier, with a handy side tab that pops up and allows users to quickly list different sources in a variety of academic styles. Merge by MailChimp offers users the ability to create customised emails in Docs by pulling information from Sheets and sending to contacts in a desired format.
The Add-Ons store integration for Google Docs and Sheets is a welcome addition, and has the potential to elevate Google Drive’s status as a content creation tool, we just hope that in-tool advertising is kept to a minimum.
