Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
March 2016 (United Kingdom)
Not much details have emerged around DC's superhero smash-up, as director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Man of Steel) has kept a tight rein on any leaks. Luckily now a teaser trailer for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice has seen the light of day. Those hoping to spot the last son of Krypton and the Gotham Knight duke it out will have to wait a bit longer since not much is actually revealed, but the teaser does show both heroes’ costumes. Hopefully we get a bit more info on the "Unite The Seven" message we saw with the Aquaman Tweet, come 20 April.
Best Bit: All of it, as the teaser is only 22 seconds long.
Mad Max: Fury Road
May in Belgium
If you are a child of the 80s, you will remember the wild ride that was Mad Max. We do, however, have a feeling that nothing, nothing will prepare us for what is waiting in Mad Max: Fury Road. The latest trailer features a very young Mel Gibson from scenes direct from the original, but you can actually skip to 1:40 for the real action. If Fury Road isn’t on your must watch list of movies for 2015, it will be after you click play below.
Best Bit: 1:40 for an instant adrenaline punch.
When Marnie Was There
May 2015 (United States)
When Marnie Was There is the latest, and most probably the last, film to come from Studio Ghibli. As with anything from the famed Japanese anime house, the movie looks beautifully put together, with an intriguing story revolving around two young girls from seemingly different worlds. Part coming of age story, part final swan song, the English dubbed version of When Marnie Was There will arrive Stateside in May. As for when local audiences can enjoy it, visiting your local anime shop might well be in order.
Best Bit: 0:19 as the beautiful melody begins to play.
Live from New York!
Unknown
Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Bill Murray, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell – the list of Saturday Night Live alumni just goes on, and on, and on. The upcoming Live from New York! documentary follows SNL from its humble beginnings in 1975, with interviews from former actors and writers and behind-the-scenes shenanigans adding to the comedy mix. If comedy is your thing, this one should be on your list, that is, if it ever makes it to SA.
Best Bit: Will Ferrell with his Bush bit at 0:53, and any scene with Chevy Chase a close second.
Every Secret Thing
May 2015 (United States)
Every Secret Thing looks like an intense thriller in every sense of the word. It tells the story of two young girls that kidnap a three-year old child. Sentenced to seven years in prison, they return to their hometown only for a similar incident to occur. In steps Detective Nancy Porter (Elizabeth Banks) as this mysterious and heated crime thriller draws to a climactic end. For anyone that enjoyed Gone Girl, Every Secret Thing feels much along the same lines.
Best Bit: 1:23 as Banks realises that there is far more than meet the eye.
Barista Wars
Unknown
The world of coffee is a strange one – just imagine millions of people across the globe each day trying to score a caffeine kick. Baristas though can be even stranger, with the upcoming Barista Wars documentary tracing the competition for the title of UK Barista Champion. Although the footage looks hyper, it’s a shame that the trailer is narrated by an old British granny that only slurps cold, decaffeinated brew.
Best Bit: We suspect they had more than just coffee over at 0:51 (a split second of NSFW).
Results
April 2015
Whether the trailer for Results, starring Cobie Smulders (How I Met your Mother), Kevin Corrigan (Seven Psychopaths) and Guy Pierce (Memento), finds its footing with you is going to depend on one thing – whether you like oddball characters in equally oddball romantic comedies.
Corrigan’s Danny turns to self-styled guru Trevor (Pierce) for help with his love life, while Smulders shows off another side (literally as well as figuratively) as somewhat kooky gym instructor, Kat. The lives of the trio then becomes inexplicably entangled, while exploring the relationship between money, love and happiness, and whether the former truly can buy the latter.
Best Bit: Kat busting a mother for eating a rich treat at 0:16.
Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser
Unknown
Loud, obnoxious, annoying, grating, puerile – and those are the good adjectives we can think of when reminiscing about Joe Dirt. Apparently though, someone has decided we need more of David Spade reprising his role as the cringeworthy, mulleted Joe Dirt. The plotline, such as it is, sees Dirt travelling back in time and becoming filthy rich. There is a chance this might fall into the so bad it’s good category, otherwise it would, we suspect, join the original in an unmarked grave covered in dirt and best left forgotten.
Best Bit: The final frame couldn’t come too soon at 0:44.
