Earlier this year Oppo released the impressive Reno5 5G smartphone (check our one-month review), and if you were lucky enough to get one, a new software update will make it even better. The update allows Reno5 users to temporarily increase the amount of RAM (random access memory) in their devices.

The Memory Expansion Technology, RAM Expansion, allows users to convert part of their smartphone’s available storage memory to virtual RAM, through the phone’s settings. Depending on the phone’s memory storage, users could also freely switch the level of RAM expansion according to their actual usage needs.

RAM is one of the fastest types of memory, allowing a device to quickly switch between tasks, meaning that the amount of RAM a device has is a primary factor affecting its response speed. The benefits of extended RAM assist with smartphone speed and capabilities to launch multiple apps without any lag. It created a more defined user experience without any costs associated.

How to do this

How to expand your RAM is quite easy. Go to Settings > Software Update and check that you have ColorOS 11.1 installed.

Then go to Settings > About Phone > RAM. Select the RAM Expansion option and decide if you want to expand by 2 GB, 3 GB or 5 GB of storage space.

Restart your phone for the settings to take effect, and then enjoy the fruits of your labour.
