With the iPhone X now out in the open, one may be forgiven for thinking that all the big smartphone reveals of 2017 are done and dusted, but there are still a few more devices on the horizon of note. One is the Google Pixel 2, and another is the Huawei Mate 10.

The latter, which is scheduled for an unveiling in Munich on 16 October, is what takes our focus at the moment, with the Chinese manufacturer stating that the new device's camera experience will be enhanced by "intelligence".

The details come from a press release, in which Huawei never states the precise specifications of the camera on the Mate 10, but rather that the artificial intelligence imbued within the smartphone could prove revolutionary for the industry.

While we're yet to see these AI features in action, the company does have a solid track record in delivering great camera experiences on the smartphones. The light painting effect on the Huawei P8, along with the second gen Leica dual-lens of the Mate 9 are notable standouts.  

As for how the Mate 10 will push things a step further, Huawei has alluded to the capabilities of its Mobile AI-focused Kirin 970 chipset, which debuted at IFA earlier this month. To that end, Huawei says the Mate 10's intelligent camera will be able to, "recognise face features, objects and scenes, and to detect motion using artificial intelligence." How this intelligence will be integrated into the finished product remains to be seen.

We could also soon find the Chinese manufacturer enter the same digital assistant field as its peers, having recently stated their intent to take on Apple's Siri.

To date Google and Samsung have showcased the recognition functionality of Google Assistant and Bixby respectively, so the chances of Huawei throwing their hat in the ring with a similar offering makes a lot of sense.

Whether or not they actually will, will have to wait until 16 October.
