The current state of motoring is concerned with two specific trends: electric vehicles and self-driving cars. While the former was a significant focus at the Frankfurt Motor Show recently, it is self-driving or autonomous vehicles that grab our attention today, as Intel and Waymo have announced a partnership that will see the pair produce a fully fledged car

Intel and Waymo are currently working together, with Waymo's Chrysler Pacifica Minivans (pictured above) already operating with Intel's technology found throughout the vehicle. This latest announcement, however, points to the pair pushing to create autonomous cars capable of working in a variety of environments, free of driver assistance.

"Given the pace at which autonomous driving is coming to life, I fully expect my children’s children will never have to drive a car," noted Intel CEO Brian Krzanich in a blog post about the announcement.

As such, instead of placing their sensors, processors and AI software in existing vehicles, the pair will be working closer together to make a self-driving vehicle from scratch. "Intel’s collaboration with Waymo ensures Intel will continue its leading role in helping realise the promise of autonomous driving and a safer, collision-free future," concluded Krzanich.

Precisely when we'll see the first Intel and Waymo self-driving cars hit the roads, remains to be seen.
