The finals of the MTN Asphalt Cup, in partnership with Gameloft, was held at the first Comic Con Africa this past weekend. While a lot of the top gaming action was reserved for the PC gaming events, it was surprising how much excitement this mobile racing game was responsible for. And with R250k for the player who ended up on top, there was a fair amount to compete for.

Played on Samsung smartphones but broadcasted on bigger screens, this popular mobile racing game was adapted by MTN for local gaming fanatics. Unfortunately, no local racing tracks were available, but MTN notes a proudly South African soundtrack that features some of the finest South African EDM DJs (available from MTN Music+).

Amongst the excitement of fans of comics, pop culture and gaming, Priyesh Kasan (aka Dapri) took on Ntsika Jingqi (aka Titanator) in the final round of the game. Tensions ran high and nervous spectators looked on as these gamers skidded around the virtual racing tracks, battling for the top spot. Kasan from Lenasia outraced Jingqi to reign supreme and win the grand prize of R250 000. Ntsika walked away with R100 000, not bad for for coming in second.

“Congratulations to Priyesh and all top 8 finalists who participated at this year’s competition. This weekend was all about our gamers and we were so proud to roll out the Asphalt Cup with such a uniquely South African feel. We’ve been thrilled at the take-up of the game and our commitment is to keep adding to the options on offer on our platform, MTN Gamer+” says Jacqui O’Sullivan, executive for corporate affairs at MTN South Africa.

The MTN Asphalt Cup might be over, but gamers can still enjoy the mobile game. It is available for download to all android users in South Africa from mtnasphaltcup.mobi or by dialling *464*80#.
