If you are an MTN customer there's now the addition of embedded Sim (eSim) connections on selected smartphones and the inclusion of eSim connections for selected Apple smart watches from 15 December 2020. The solution means a device can connect to the MTN network without the need for a physical sim, as it is embedded into the hardware of the device.

MTN launched its eSim support capability last year with the Samsung Galaxy Watch as trial into the market, and this is now being significantly upscaled, according to the network. Eight eSim-capable Samsung phones are now available, as well as seven new iPhones devices.

“Sim cards have been present in devices since the nineties and we all got so used to them, despite their relative inconvenience. The future is one where these will be embedded in far more devices and MTN is ensuring that our customers are not left behind as this technology advances forward at a rapid rate,” says MTN SA’s executive for Corporate Affairs, Jacqui O’Sullivan.

This solution from MTN is, notably, a market-first in SA as it allows people to store multiple profiles on a single device, effectively having two or more numbers, and switch between them at ease.

“This is ideal for anyone who may require an additional number for travel or business. You can store multiple contract profiles on a single device, switching between them with ease to manage your lifestyle,” says O’Sullivan.

“The eSim is not only built into smartphones, but also wearable devices at the point of manufacture. Customers are then able to sync their wearables to other mobile devices, sharing the same number and contract value, whereby they can send and receive messages, notifications and calls on their eSim wearable even when their mobile device isn’t within range,” explains O’Sullivan.
