Mercedes-Benz is doubling down of electric vehicles. Not the ones you'll find on the road, but rather those destined for the racetrack, and in particular Formula E. The German carmaker has confirmed that it will be taking part in the 2018/2019 of the Formula E Championship.

Unfortunately though, it will come at the cost of their participation in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), which they have competed in for the past 18 years. "Our years in the DTM will always be held high as a major chapter in the motorsport history of Mercedes," notes Mercedes-Benz head of Motorsport, Toto Wolff.

Mercedes' recent move would make them one of several of companies to do so, with Audi ending its part in the FIA World Endurance Championship, in order to focus on Formula E too. As such, with industry leaders like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar and Audi all joining the ranks of Formula E in recent years, it's certainly of form of motorsport to keep an eye on.

"Formula E is like an exciting start-up venture - it offers a brand new format, combining racing with a strong event character, in order to promote current and future technologies," concludes Wolff.
