When it comes to All-In-One (AIO) PCs, Microsoft has always left the designing of devices in the capable hands of its Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) such as Dell, HP and Acer. That changed yesterday, however, as Microsoft unveiled the Surface Studio to the world at its Surface event.

A few weeks prior to the event getting underway, Microsoft was rumoured to have three 4K-sporting AIO's on the way, but we're fairly sure few people would have seen the Surface Studio coming. Described as being able to convert the "desktop PC into a digital canvas", as well as enabling the dreams of creatives, it appears as if Microsoft is impressed with its efforts.

As far as what this new offering is boasting, the display is 28" and features a technology that Microsoft calls PixelSense. This screen serves up 4.5K Ultra HD image quality, and delivers 63% more pixels than the equivalently sized top of the range 4K TV says Microsoft. The display's also multi-touch enabled and is fixed to a pair of hinges that allow it to be lifted and pivoted with little to no effort. Furthermore, Microsoft claims it's the thinnest monitor to ever be built at 12.5 mm.     

Moving onto the horsepower, the Surface Studio will be available with either 6th Gen Core i5 or i7 processor, depending on the model users opt for. Added to this will be a choice of 1 TB or 2 TB Rapid Hybrid Drive, along with Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M and 980M graphics cards being on offer. Lastly, it will come in 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB RAM variants, with pre-order pricing for the newly minted AIO PC starting at $2 999 Stateside.

At this stage, it's unclear whether Microsoft South Africa will bring it to local shores, particularly as the Surface Book and Surface Pro tablets are yet to make their official way into the country.
