Netflix adds Galaxy Note 8 and Xperia XZ1 to list of HDR compatible devices
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 5 September 2017 | Categories: newsThe list of mobile devices that users can enjoy Netflix's HDR content remains fairly small, with the LG G6 and Sony Xperia XZ Premium being the only real options. There have, however, been a number of additions made in recent weeks following IFA 2017. To that end, along with the LG V30, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Sony Xperia XZ1 have now been added to the HDR-compatible list.
According to SamMobile, which was one of the first sites to discover the new inclusions, there are now five devices in total capable of accessing the content via Netflix. As The Verge points out though, it will only be available to Netflix subscribers with the service's top-tier 4K option.
Along with a wider colour gamut, as well as improved visuals, HDR appears to be a growing area of importance for smartphone makers, with several new devices in the past year integrating the technology. There still, however, remains a battle over the agreed upon standard, with Samsung working on HDR10+, and LG favouring DolbyVision.
As such, the lack of clarity on standards means those with a Galaxy S8 or S8+, both of which support HDR, are left in the dark as to the availability of Netflix streaming options on their respective devices.
