YouTube can be a massive time drain if you’re not careful. If you feel like you have lost a bit of self control and can’t quite handle your YouTube binges, the company has come up with a solution. Sort of. You can now set reminders that pop up and tell you to that it’s time to take a break.

It’s not compulsory, and it’s not actually set as default, so in order to activate these notifications, head to Settings > General, and then tap “Remind me to take a break”. Here your options range from a reminder every 15 minutes, through to every 180 minutes for those taking their YouTube watching seriously.

This comes after Google noted that they will pay a lot more attention to the “Digital Well-being” of its users, at the recent I/O 2018 conference. The new Android P will for example include a dashboard of sort to tell you how much time you’ve spend on your phone, and which apps were used.

For an interesting critique of Google’s new steps, it’s worthwhile reading Andrew Martonik’s piece over at Android Central, where he notes:  “We need to use our phones less. But the initiative to do so lies within ourselves, not in waiting for Google's help.” True words we believe.
